In June of 2015, Maggie was diagnosed with a torn ACL in her right rear leg. After 4 months of a non-invasive attempt to heal the ACL, Maggie had additional x-rays of the joint which was then diagnosed as bone cancer. In December of that year, to end the pain and save her life, we made the decision to have her leg amputated. The prognosis then gave her 3 to 6 months to live. After almost 2 years of a much different but pain free life, the cancer returned, this time to her front leg. On August 29, 2017, Maggie lost her battle with cancer.
We've created a pictorial tribute to her life including pictures of Maggie and the many visitors she interacted with at the winery. If anyone has additional pictures of themselves and Maggie, please forward to sue@krazelegz.com and we'll add them to the slideshow.
Maggie was not only a loved member of our family, but a valued member of our winery and vineyard team.
Prior to Maggie's arrival to SKAHA vineyard, we had a major problem with bears dining on the yet to be harvest grapes; under Maggie's six year watch, we never had another issue with bears. In 2017, our first harvest season without her, we battled with four bears dining on grapes.
Just after dusk on the evening before the vet was to come to put Maggie down, Maggie and Henry were resting out in the picnic area. A coyote was sneaking up on Henry. Maggie picked up the scent, and on two legs, a third gone and a fourth swollen with cancer, bolted at the coyote, ferociously barking, putting herself between Henry and the danger.
"Who's doing your job?" without a whimper.... Maggie always was!
